ABOUT SARAH

One of my earliest memories was of my four-year-old self pressed against thick windows watching our plane depart Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport.

It was the crack of dawn when the arid Arabic air welcomed my family to the first of many new homes. Rubbing sleep off my eyes, I stared at the ground controller’s marshalling wands, hypnotised by the twin neon lights as they beckoned the Airbus towards the runway. I was more fascinated by the idea of waking up in a new country than scared of the unknown.

Travelling was already a norm then — a notion that has stayed with me for 20 or so years ‘till present day.

I have since lived in four Canadian cities from my childhood home Toronto to wickedly cold Regina, packed three huge suitcases and moved to Cambodia, then ‘Eat Pray Love’d’ my way across Asia (albeit with much less praying, more eating and even more penny-pinching). Many rice fields and moto mishaps later, I find myself in the Netherlands — land of wild cyclists, Gouda cheese and ‘being normal’.

A multimedia journalist by trade, I have sharpened my teeth in some of Canada’s and Southeast Asia’s largest newsrooms for over eight years. I wrote, photographed, edited and shot videos for an international news wire, daily newspapers, magazines and news websites like Agence France-Presse’s Manila bureau, Toronto Star, The Province, Metro News and Expatica. Under a Princeton in Asia media fellowship, I landed a year-long stint as a reporter and sub-editor at The Phnom Penh Post, where I won the Society of Publishers in Asia’s 2015 Excellence in Reporting Breaking News award for a joint coverage of the massive HIV outbreak in Cambodia’s Battambang province.

Currently the Social Media Manager for Fluke Corporation’s European, Middle Eastern and African markets, I am responsible of managing and building the regions’ full stack social media program from the ground up, while simultaneously driving innovation and growth as the News Strategy Editor of Eindhoven News, the largest news and info site catering to the booming international community in Eindhoven, where I’m now based.

Specializing in health, tech, immigration, culture and travel, I also freelance as a writer, editor, photographer, videographer, producer and digital strategy consultant in Europe.

When I’m not being serious, I am probably losing sleep over travelogues and fantasy books or planning motorcycle trips throughout the Old Continent. That, and salivating over sushi.
